What Is It?
A Modifier or Instruction is the additional information that maybe required to complete and Order for a particular Item/Product. Once correctly configured a patron/staff member will be prompted with the appropriate Modifiers/Instructions, and will need to respond to these prompts, when placing an order for an Item/Product.
For example, in the case of ordering a Coffee, patron/staff maybe prompted for the following: What Size?, With Milk?, With Sugar? and/or Extras?
Why Is It Needed?
Some Products may require patrons to provide additional information when ordering them. For example:
- Additions
- For example in the case of ordering a Coffee, patrons may be given the option to specify whether they want milk with it. For example, from a choice of almond, full cream, oat, skim or soy).
- For example in the case of ordering a Rump Steak, patrons may need to specify if they also want to add a sauce (creamy garlic, gravy, pepper sauce, mushroom sauce, etc.) and/or on the side (baked potato, fries, salads, etc.) options.
- Preparation Instructions
- For example in the case of ordering a Coffee, patrons may be given the option to specify whether they want it extra hot and/or with an extra shot. he strength (single shot or double shot) or the type of milk (full cream, skim, almond, soy, etc.).
- For example in the case of ordering a Rump Steak, patrons may need to specify how they want it prepared. Such as rare, medium, well done, etc.
- Size
- For example in the case of ordering a Coffee, patrons may be given the option to specify what size coffee they want. For example, from a choice of small, regular or large.
- For example in the case of ordering a Beer, patrons may be given the option to specify what size coffee they want. For example, from a choice of pot, schooner, pint or jug.
- Special Instructions
- Patrons may also be given the opportunity to provide special dietary preferences in the form of free text that can be entered at the time of ordering. For example a patron/staff member can enter the text ‘No Onions with this order’ to alert food preparation staff of their requirements.
Who Can Create Them?
Modifiers/Instructions are created using the Products and/or Product Quick Edit menus, and as such any staff member that has the appropriate permissions to access to these menus, will be able to create them. See the What is Required? section below for more information.
What Is Required?
- Ensure at least one Clerk/Staff Member has the appropriate Clerk Security Group permissions required to edit the following:
- Products
- Ensure Products that can be ordered by patrons exist and are active in the Venue’s Locations where they can be ordered.
How Are They Created?
Essentially Modifiers/Instructions are also SwiftPOS Products and are created using the Product Records or Product Quick Edit menus. They differ from Products that can be ordered, in that they are generally linked to orderable Products, rather than being available to be ordered as a Product themselves.
For example, to ensure a patron/staff member is prompted to specify how the patron wants their Rump Steak to be prepared. Products will need to be created for each of the options available to patrons. That is, rare, medium/rare, medium, medium/well done, well done, etc.
Example of Instruction Products created for the prompting of patrons as to how they want their steak prepared when ordering.
Grouping Modifier/Instructional Products
A Venue may have many modifier/instructional Products of different types, that are available for patrons to order. To ensure patrons/staff members are prompted with the correct and appropriate modifiers/instructions, these need to be grouped based on the Products ordered. Grouping of modifier/instructional Products can be achieved in the following ways:
- Families – RECOMMENDED. Create a Family and assign the modifier/instructional Products that need to be grouped together.
- Categories – Create a Category and assign the modifier/instructional Products that need to be grouped together.
Example of a Family to group Modifiers/Instructional Products together
Notes …
It is very likely that the Venue is already making use of one of the above grouping methods. Families or Categories that are available when selling Products via SwiftPOS Touch Terminals can also be made available via OrderAway, TouchMini and/or 3rd Party Ordering systems.
Assigning Modifiers/Instructions To Products
Once modifier/instructional Products are grouped together into Families or Categories, they then need to be assigned to Products that patrons can order. This is done via a feature known as Post Linking. Refer to Post Linking for more information.
This completes MODIFIERS/INSTRUCTIONS for Back Office, OrderAway, Self Service, Touch and TouchMini.
