Prepare Pricing For Card Surcharge Changes

Swiftpos - What To Consider

This provides Venues with information relating to the upcoming Card Surcharge changes that will be introduced in Australia.

From the 1st of October 2026, Venues will need to comply with the new ruling that prevents them from applying card payment surcharges to debit, prepaid, and credit card transactions. This will affect all Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and EFTPOS payments.

Venues that currently pass on merchant service fees will need to review their current payment configurations and overall item/product pricing to ensure they comply, before these changes come into effect.

About

What To Consider?

Venues currently applying card payment surcharges should review the following:

  • Existing Configuration - Review current card surcharge configurations in Swiftpos and with your payment provider.
  • Item/Product Pricing - Determine if overall item/product selling prices need to be adjusted.
  • Discount Strategy - Assess whether Checkout Stage Discounts are appropriate for your pricing strategy.
  • Selling Prices - Update selling prices across all Swiftpos solutions. For example, Menu Boards, Orderaway, Self-Serve Kiosks, Touch POS and Touchmini.
  • Compliance - Ensure all changes align with the payment-provider's requirements for the October 1, 2026 deadline.
  • Testing - Test the upcoming changes to configurations and pricing in a Test environment to ensure that when implemented in a Production environment, all functions as expected.

Notes ...

Any changes to item/product pricing should be determined independently by the Venue and should not simply recreate a prohibited card payment surcharge.

How To?

IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER

Swiftpos does not determine what prices a Venue should charge. Venues remain responsible for determining their own pricing and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulatory and payment-provider requirements.

How To GET STARTED?

Swiftpos provides two key features to assist with this transition:

Using the Price Changes Wizard?

The Price Changes Wizard can be used to prepare and apply in bulk changes to item/product selling prices in Back Office.

As part of preparation needed for the upcoming Card Surcharge changes, Venues may wish to review their overall item/product pricing. To facilitate pricing changes that may result from the review, the Price Changes Wizard offers Venues with an efficient process to update item/product prices in bulk.

Refer HERE for more information.

Use Checkout Stage Discounts?

Venues may wish to offer patrons different pricing based on the payment option selected at checkout. Checkout Stage Discounts allow a discount to be associated with a specific payment media in Touch POS.

Example

A Venue can configure its standard item/product selling price and then apply a Checkout Stage Discount when an eligible payment media (such as cash or a specific card type) is selected. The discount is applied at the checkout stage rather than changing the underlying item/product price.

This provides an alternative pricing model for Venues that want to encourage selected payment methods without applying a surcharge to others.
